Together we’ve been watching the challenges faced by local wolf and wolfdog sanctuary, In Harmony With Nature, as they faced the potential for losing their property over the past year following an illness of a benefactor and other difficulties. You helped us share the story, raise funds, and work to make a paw-sitive difference for these amazing animals and local educational resource. THANK YOU for your support!!

Gavin, Volunteer with the Artist Heroes project
This refuge has been in a veritable Schrodinger’s Box for quite a while – and we will soon get to peek inside. Your continued support over the next couple of weeks could mean the difference between a bright future for these animals – or an uncertain and potentially devastating one.
The property was lost at action to the bank – they outbid the individual who entered the auction to save the property. Now, the property is with a company that will be selling it – and the sanctuary has the option to work with them. There are many potential positive outcomes, but in a likely scenario In Harmony will need to have the cash to purchase the property.
If you haven’t pledged yet, or would consider making an additional pledge, please log in today. Your contribution could make all the difference.

How does this benefit you and our greater community? Come join our Picnic With Wolves on December 5th for a tour, or simply think about the potential for local youth to have a wolf and wolfdog tour or service project to learn about a unique aspect of responsible pet ownership and breeding; a group tour or service event for your social group, work group, or team; and most importantly the service to these animals that is unique, specialized, and in great demand. There are scores of wolfdogs on waiting lists for rescues – and only a few specialized agencies able to care for them. Let’s not lose this one, that is located in our local community and has the potential not only to impact the animals, but to provide a wonderful engagement opportunity for us all.

World’s oldest bear dies in WSPA designed sanctuary
Jun 18, 2013
Andreas rests in a WSPA built sanctuary

We’re sad to announce that Andreas, a 50 year old European brown bear, passed away last month in a Greek sanctuary. He was one of the last dancing bears to be used for entertainment in Greece.
Caught as a cub in the 1960s, Andreas would spend the next three decades in the
cruel environment of the bear dancing trade. However, in January 1993 everything changed for Andreas. He was rescued as part of a larger project to end the trade in dancing bears in Greece.
In 1993, at the age of thirty, he was a very old and blind bear. But after his rescue, Andreas received a fresh start in a new, WSPA-designed sanctuary in the forests of northern Greece. In fact, at that time, it was the world’s first bear sanctuary and managed by the Greek environmental group,
Arcturos.
Set in the mountains, the forest enclosure introduced Andreas to a number of other rescued dancing bears, who he would spend his life with. It is testimony to the care provided by Arcturos that Andreas would live a wonderful twenty years more.
Andreas died peacefully in his den on May 24th 2013, aged at least 50 years old, making him the oldest bear to have lived at any sanctuary we know of. With 10 rescued bears still living in the Greek sanctuary, Arcturos have a lot of animals to care for and public to educate. In fact, the sanctuary works hard to educate children about the need to protect wildlife and to carry out many projects aimed at protecting bears, wolves and other native Greek wildlife.
Did you know?
In the wild, bears live maybe 20 years but as their teeth break or fall out and their health decreases they tend to die of natural causes before the age of 25. Andreas was one old bear! Possibly the oldest in the world!

Demand Arrest for Wolf Poached from Sanctuary
- Target: Wyoming Game & Fish Department, Supervisor of Investigative Unit Mike Ehlebracht
- Sponsored by: Animal Advocates
Stan Castagno, (registered with the Wyoming Outfittrers and Guide), lured a female wolf out of the protection and sanctuary of Yellowstone Park with a recording of a wolf pup in distress, and shot and killed her. He is very proud of this murder of an innocent animal, and displays it on his Facebook page.
Attempting to find loopholes in existing laws does not make this poacher any less a criminal. Poaching from a sanctuary is unacceptable- the fact that he is a “guide” makes his actions even more reprehenible. Arrest Stan Castagno for poaching violations.
