Efter påtryckningar från vargmotståndare sade Orsa Björnpark nej till utsättning av vargvalpar till vilda vargflockar. Nu har Delsbo slakteri tagit beslut om att omedelbart avbryta alla leveranser till Järvzoo. Tidigare har slakteriet skänkt tio ton slaktavfall per år, rapporterar SvD. ‒ Det är av solidaritetsskäl med våra leverantörer. En del av dem sitter på pass hela nätterna för att skydda sina djur mot björn och varg, och samtidigt backar vi upp Järvzoo med gratis foder, säger Bengt Eriksson, vd för Delsbo slakteri.
Slakteriets ställningstagande gör Järvzoo tveksamma till att delta i regeringens planer på att placera ut vargvalpar i det fria. Även Skansen är tveksamma. En person har anmält otillåten jakt på den riksbekanta Junselevargen, rapporterar allehanda.se.

Skoterjakten skulle ha skett för att ringa in vargarna och underlätta jakt i samband med att Naturvårdsverket fattade sitt beslut om skyddsjakt.

Men Förvaltningsrätten stoppade en kort tid därefter Naturvårdsverkets beslut.

Polisen säger att det inte finns några belägg för att det verkligen inträffat något brott, men att det kan vara brottsligt att ”hetsa en varg med skoter”.

Howling For Justice

I can’t say this enough, we must stop USFWS from delisting wolves nationally, it will be the final nail in their coffin.  Please act now and voice your disdain over the political  “not based on the best available science” campaignthe service is waging against America’s wolves.

“This month, following a brief hiatus, arguments have reignited with the release of an independent review paper from the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis at the University of California-Santa Barbara. It finds that the delisting proposal is not, in fact, based on the “best available science.”

The review vindicates critics who say the Fish and Wildlife Service is trying to de-list the wolves prematurely, finding “problematic conclusions” in the proposal that treat contentious genetic and ecological theories as fact.

The review got at least one big result: the Fish and Wildlife Service responded by reopening its proposal to public comment…

The firefighters’ oath of protecting lives still doesn’t mean anything in Holley, New York. The Holley Fire Department is once again gearing up for another “squirrel shoot ’em up” event on February 22.

The appalling “Squirrel Slam,” a fundraiser for the Holley Fire Department, is moving forward for the eighth consecutive year despite pleas from the public to cancel it. The “Squirrel Slam” wantonly promotes the mass killing of squirrels. Last year prizes were given to the individuals who killed the largest and heaviest squirrels, often pregnant females and those who may well have recently given birth, leaving their young left alone to starve to death. Children as young as 14 years old will be encouraged to gun down as many of these harmless and unsuspecting animals as possible.

Glowing reindeer can be spotted in northern Finland thanks to a reflective spray which makes them more visible in a bid to prevent car accidents, Finnish reindeer breeders said on Tuesday.

“We are hoping that it is so useful that we can use the spray in the entire region and on all reindeer, from young to old,” said Anne Ollila, head of Finland’s Reindeer Herders’ Association.

The association has started testing two reflective sprays on the animals’ antlers so they are more visible to motorists at night.

According to Ollila, there are between 3,000 and 5,000 accidents involving reindeer every year, which are “much deadlier for the reindeer than for the drivers.”

Rävskabb sprider sig bland fjällrävarna som lever i Stekenjokk och Borgafjäll, på gränsen mellan Jämtlands och Västerbottens län. Detta upptäcktes förra året och då medicinerades fjällrävarna framgångsrikt. Före jul upptäcktes det nya tecken på rävskabb. Nu ska fjällrävarna få mera medicin. – Vi ska intensifiera medicineringen. Det ska läggas ut falukorv och annat kött vid lyorna som är preparerat med mediciner för att bota dem, säger Emma Vidmark, samordnare för hotade arter på länsstyrelsen, till SVD.

I for one, certainly don’t buy the arguments presented by farmers and hunters in the heated wolf debate. For all I care their beliefs are outdated and self-serving in a country that easily can sustain them all due to the vast pieces of wilderness. I’m glad that the Eurpean Commission interfered with the earlier plans of a cull and stopped them dead in their tracks. Way to go EU!!

Wild bison die because of Montana’s livestock industry Late last week we posted an article about Yellowstone National Park’s plan to kill between 300-600… bison. According to the Buffalo Field Campaign, the article failed to mention that the slaughter already began on Friday, February 7, when Yellowstone officials captured 25 bison, confined them in a trap for five days and then shipped the terrified bison to a slaughterhouse in Ronan, MT! The bison slaughter is made possible because of an Interagency Bison Management Plan (IBMP) developed by the USDA-Forest Service, USDA-Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service, Montana Department of Livestock, Montana Fish Wildlife & Parks and the National Park Service/Yellowstone National Park. This plan is archaic, politically motivated and represents the interests, not of bison, but only those of the Montana livestock industry, who has zero tolerance for wild animals such as wolves and bison.
